Windows NT installation guide - Procedure if Windows NT Networking is already installed

If networking support is already installed on the NT Workstation, you need to verify that all the components required to support the IDSL modem are installed.

In general, if network support is already installed, the only missing component will be the Remote Access Service (RAS).

Once RAS is installed, you need to associate a Modem with that service.

STEP 3a - Install Missing Network Components

1. If you continued on from Step 2 (Check for Missing Network Components), the Network window should already by visible.

If not, from the Control Panel, double-click the Network icon. The Network Window appears.

In either case select the Protocols tab.

A list of installed Protocols will be displayed.

2. Verify that the TCP/IP protocol support is displayed.

If TCP/IP is already installed, proceed to section 4.

If TCP/IP is not installed, click Add.

3. Installing TCP/IP will require the NT Workstation CD. You may have to explicitly state the full path of the files on the CD, in which case D:\I386 should be entered, with "D" substituted with the CD-ROM drive letter of the NT Workstation.

Having installed TCP/IP, you now need to verify the installed set of services.

4. Click the Services tab. This will display a list of installed services.

Verify that the following services are displayed: -

  • Remote Access Services

  • RPC Configuration

  • NetBIOS Interface

  • Workstation

  • Server

If all of these services are present, you need to associate a modem with the Remote Access Service. To Associate a modem, select Remote Access Service and click Properties. The Remote Access Setup window appears. Select Add and then follow the instructions from section 6.

If all these services are not present, you will need to install the missing services individually.

IMPORTANT: when installing missing services, leave adding the Remote Access Service until last.

5. From the Services tab, for each missing service, click Add.  The Select Network Service window appears. Select a service to install and click OK

As before, you may be prompted for the Windows NT Setup disk.

6. When installing the Remote Access Service (RAS), you have to associate a modem with the service.

Before you associate a modem with the RAS, you must ensure an IDSL Modem is installed on the computer.

There are 3 installation options that will determine what appears on the screen and the actions you need to take. These options are: -

a) You have no modems installed on your computer.

If no modems are installed on your computer, you will be confronted with the following: -

Select Yes and follow the IDSL Modem Installation procedure

b) You have a modem installed on your computer but it is not an IDSL Modem.

In this case the Remote Access Setup window will appear.

Select Add.

The Add RAS Device window will appear.

Check the list of RAS Capable Devices by clicking on the down arrow of the modem devices list. If an IDSL Modem at 11520 does not appear, you must install the IDSL modem.

Click Install Modem and follow the IDSL Modem Installation procedure

c) You already have an IDSL Modem installed on your computer.

In this case, the Add RAS Device window will appear.

Check the list of RAS Capable Devices by clicking on the down arrow of the modem devices list. If an IDSL Modem at 11520 does appear, the IDSL modem is already installed.

Proceed directly to the next section.

7. Having installed an IDSL Modem on your computer, you now need to associate it with the RAS. Click on the down arrow of the list of RAS Capable Devices and select IDSL MODEM at 11520 and click OK.

8. The Remote Access Setup window appears. Click Continue.

This returns you to the Network window.

9. Select Close

The Bindings information will be updated and you may now be prompted to restart windows.

If you are NOT asked to restart Windows, proceed to STEP 4, and Configure Windows NT Dial-Up Networking

IMPORTANT

If you are asked to restart windows, please read the following carefully.

If you have not found any missing Services or Protocols, it is OK to restart, so select Yes.

If you have installed missing service components, DO NOT RESTART WINDOWS AT THIS POINT.

Select No, restart later.

You MUST re-install your current Service Pack. This must be done so that the latest files are used for the new Network support that have been installed. If you fail to do this, you may well end up with invalid files on your system.

Once the Service Pack has been re-installed, you will be prompted to Restart the computer. Select Yes to restart.

When you restart, proceed from Step 3a (Install Missing Components) to ensure that the installation was successful before proceeding to Step 4.

Windows Networking components are now installed.
