MODEM INSTALLATION - SINGLE PHONE SOCKET

Incoming Line

To use the IDSL Modem, it must be connected directly to the telephone exchange, via the incoming line.

The original telephone line, back to the exchange, will carry digital signals after the IDSL Modem is installed. The line will then be referred to as a digital subscriber line or DSL.

Single Socket

If you have only a single telephone, located adjacent to the required computer/data facility, and there is no more wiring beyond this point, then no modification of the house wiring is necessary.

Installation is accomplished by simply unplugging the telephone, connecting the modem to the vacated socket, with the supplied cable, and plugging the telephone into the Phone port of the modem.

Modem Connections

All connections to the IDSL MODEM are made via sockets on the back panel.

  • Connect the RJ-45 (DSL / Telephony combined port) to the wall mounted (country specific) socket using the 3m cable provided.
  • Connect the female DB9 connector (RS-232 interface, V.24 data port) to the serial port (COM port) of the PC, using the supplied cable.
  • Connect a desk phone to the RJ-11 socket, if required.
  • Connect the low voltage dc output of the mains adapter to the 2.5mm power socket (centre positive).

Telephone Service During Installation

If the modem is installed prior to the LT (its companion exchange equipment) but not powered up, metallic bypass circuits will preserve the connection from the telephone to the incoming line.

Cordless Telephones

If a cordless telephone is used, it should be located at least 3m from the modem.

Earthing (Grounding)

The IDSL MODEM is designed to operate without a local earth connection.

Do not earth the IDSL MODEM.

Mains Power

The modem must be powered from the local mains, using the supplied plug top adapter. The mains outlet should not be shared by other equipment, which might generate mains-born RF interference. This would include such equipment as TV sets, microwave ovens, Ham Radio transceivers etc.

Market Specific Power Adapter

Check that the power adapter supplied with the IDSL MODEM is correctly rated for the voltage and frequency of the local mains supply.

Use of a non-approved power supply will negate the equipment warranty.
