STEP 3b - Install Windows NT Networking

1. This will start the Network Setup Wizard.

You need to decide on how the computer should participate on a network.

Uncheck Wired to the network

Check Remote access to the network.

Then click Next.

This brings up the Network Adapter window.

2. You now need to select a Network Adapter.

No Network adapters are  required. Just click Next.

This brings up the Network Protocols window.

3. You must now select the required Network Protocols.

Select TCP/IP Protocol

However, be sure that both NWLink IPX/SPX and NetBEUI are unchecked.

Then click Next.

This brings up the Network Services window.

4. You must now select the required Network Services.

No additional services need adding. Click Next.

 

The Ready to Install window appears.

5. Windows NT is now ready to start install Networking Components. Click Next to start the installation.

6. Windows NT now needs to copy the required files to install Networking. Windows needs to know where to find the files.

Tell setup wizard where to find NT installation files. This will typically be the Microsoft NT Workstation CD. Ensure the CD is placed in the drive, and enter the drive letter (in this case "G:\").

When the disc is inserted, click Continue.

A TCP/IP setup window appears. 

7. If you wish to use DHCP on your network, select Yes. Otherwise, select No. If unsure, speak to your system administrator.

A Remote Access Setup window appears.

8. You now need to associate a modem Select with the RAS.

You may already have the IDSL modem installed from a previous installation. If this is the case, the "Add RAS Device" window will be displayed, and you should skip to selecting the RAS modem (section 15 below).

Otherwise follow these procedures to install the modem.

If no modems are installed, you will be confronted with a message informing you that There are no Ras Capable devices to add.  Select Yes.

 

If another modem is already installed, you instead must select Install Modem to install the IDSL modem. 

Either way, the Install New Modem Wizard appears.

9. You now need to install the IDSL Modem software.

Select Don’t detect my modem, I will select it from a list and then click Next.

10. The Install New Modem window then requests that you to provide information concerning the manufacturer and the model of the new modem. 

This information for the IDSL Modem is provided on the floppy disk (in the file idsl.inf).

Insert the disk in the floppy drive.

When you have inserted the floppy disk, click the Have Disk button.

 

This brings up the Install From Disk window.

11. From Install From Disk window, click the OK button.

12. Highlight IDSL MODEM at 115200 under Models and click Next.

 

13. You now need to let windows know how your IDSL Modem is connected to your computer. The IDSL Modem will normally be connected to serial communications port 1 (referred to as COM1) or serial communications port 2 (COM2). You may need to refer to your computer manual to correctly identify which communication port your IDSL Modem is connected to.

From the Select the port to use with this modem list, select the appropriate port, to which the modem is connected (usually COM1) and click Next

14. A window will open, stating that Your modem has been set up successfully. Click the Finish button.

You are returned to the Add RAS Device window.

15. You now have an IDSL Modem installed in your computer. You need too associate the modem with the Remote Access Service.

Click on the down arrow of the list of RAS Capable Devices and select IDSL MODEM at 115200 and click OK.

 

16. The Remote Access Setup window appears. Click Continue.

The Network Bindings window appears.

17. Simply click Next.

The Start Network window appears.

18. Simply click Next.

 

19. In order to start windows Networking, you need to define a Computer Name and Workgroup/Domain membership. These should be obtained from your Network Administrator.

Enter the required details and click Next.

21. Windows NT Network software is now installed. Click the Finish button.

 

22. IMPORTANT 

You will now be asked to restart windows. DO NOT RESTART WINDOWS AT THIS POINT.

Select No, restart later.

You MUST re-install your current Service Pack. This must be done so that the latest files are used for the new Network support that have been installed. If you fail to do this, you may well end up with invalid files on your system.

Once the Service Pack has been re-installed, you will be prompted to Restart the computer. Select Yes to restart.

When you restart, you must follow Step 3a (Install Missing Components) to ensure that the installation was successful before proceeding to Step 4.

Windows Networking components are now installed.
